Wine, Women & Shoes – Chicago 2009

More than 600 wine lovers and footwear fanatics helped raise nearly $120,000 for the Midwest Regional Office of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF at Wine, Women & Shoes – Chicago 2009.

Proceeds from the Oct. 1 benefit go to a life-saving cause: UNICEF’s Accelerated Child Survival initiative in 25 sub-Saharan African countries.

At the event, attendees enjoyed:
-Shopping for designer shoes, handbags and accessories from some of the hottest local and national boutiques: Aberle, Akira, Angeleigh Anastasio, Gypsy Global Chic, Lisa Mackey Design, Lori’s Shoes and Shirise.

-Delectable wines from six of the country’s finest vintners: Alexander Valley Vineyards, Gabrielle Collection, Martellotto Wines, New Age, Schweiger Vineyards and Two Angels. Full glasses of wine at bars donated by local store Arista Foods.

-Exciting raffle and silent auction items, featuring designer apparel, international travel and luxury items. Raffle tickets were sold by volunteer Sole Men who mingled with attendees.

-Delicious dishes from Blue Plate Catering, including Mini Petite Tender of Beef Sandwiches, Chicken Rosemary Skewers, Spiced Pecan Sandwiches and Frango Mint Brownie Bites.

“Proceeds from events like Wine, Women & Shoes have helped UNICEF reduce the number of preventable child deaths each day from 25,000 to 24,000,” said Casey Marsh, director of the Midwest Regional Office of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. “This event was a celebration of this accomplishment and Chicago’s commitment to bringing that number down to zero.”

The River East Art Center provided a stylish setting for the 7,000-square-foot event. Prominent Chicago event designer Tom Kehoe created a bold and fun setting, inspired by the work of UNICEF. Décor included elegant pink and yellow accents and the theme ‘Believe in Zero’ integrated into the smallest design details.

Participating boutiques, each with their own area, displayed their fashionable footwear, jewelry and handbags for shoppers to peruse.

About UNICEF
UNICEF has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world.

Working in over 150 countries, UNICEF provides children with health care, clean water, nutrition, education, emergency relief, and more. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports UNICEF’s work through fundraising, advocacy, and education in the United States.

UNICEF is at the forefront of efforts to reduce child mortality worldwide. There has been substantial progress—the annual number of under-five deaths dropped from 13 million in 1990 to 8.8 million in 2008. But still, 24,000 children die each day from preventable causes. Our mission is to do whatever it takes to make that number zero by giving children the essentials fora safe and healthy childhood. For more information, visit www.unicefusa.org.

The Midwest is one of five regional offices in the U.S. and serves twelve states.
