THE COUTURE COUNCIL OF THE MUSEUM AT FIT CELEBRATES DRIES VAN NOTEN

On August 5, 2009 The Museum at FIT’s Couture Council chairs Yaz Hernandez, Liz Peek, and Sarah Wolfe, hosted the Annual Couture Council Summer Party at the exquisite Upper East Side home and garden of the Couture Council’s Founding Luncheon Chair Charlotte Moss.

Over 200 style gurus, designers, and fashionistas braved the heat to celebrate theCouture Council’s Annual Summer Party where it was announced that Belgian designer Dries van Noten will be receiving the Couture Council’s fourth annual Award for Artistry of Fashion on September 9, 2009. Joining the Couture Council Chairs that evening were Dr. Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of The Museum at FIT, Yigal Azrouel, Glenda Bailey, Yildiz Yuksek Blackstone (Luca Luca), Hamish Bowles, David Chu, Christian Cota, Somers Farkas, Amy Fine Collins, Cece Cord, Victor Costa, Jennifer Creel, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Joni Evans, Cathy Hardwick, Sarah Hartshorn (America's Next Top Model Season 9), Gemma Kahng, Nanette Lepore, Claudia Lebenthal, Alexandra Lebenthal, Phoebe Legere, Gillian and Sylvester Miniter, Charlotte Moss, Ralph Rucci, Arnold Scaasi, Helen and Tim Schifter, Dr. Valerie Steele, and Kay Unger.

Liz Peek and Dr. Valerie Steele delivered a toast to Dries van Noten from the second floor balcony overlooking the garden’s terrace. Guests raised their signature cocktails made of Lillet Blanc and Proscecco in recognition of the Belgian designer’s successful career, many of them commenting on van Noten’s use of color and floral patterns, which were compared to the zinnias, marigolds, potted jasmine and bright orchids in Charlotte Moss’s garden.
The Couture Council of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) will honor Dries van Noten with the 2009 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion at its fourth benefit luncheon at New York City’s Cipriani 42nd Street on Wednesday, September 9, 2009. Once again, the Couture Council’s always anticipated annual luncheon is the first event of New York’s Fall Fashion Week.
The Museum at FIT is the only museum in New York City dedicated solely to the art of fashion. Best known for its innovative and award-winning exhibitions, which have been described by Roberta Smith in The New York Times as “ravishing,” the museum has a collection of more than 50,000 garments and accessories dating from the 18th century to the present. Like other fashion museums, such as the Musée de la Mode, the Mode Museum, and the Museo de la Moda, The Museum at FIT collects, conserves, documents, exhibits, and interprets fashion. The museum’s mission is to advance knowledge of fashion through exhibitions, publications, and public programs. Visit www.fitnyc.edu/museum.

The Couture Council is a membership group of fashion enthusiasts that helps support the exhibitions and programs of The Museum at FIT. For information on the Couture Council, call 212-217-4532 or e-mail Couturecouncil@fitnyc.edu.

The museum is part of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), a college of art and design, business and technology that educates more than 10,000 students annually. FIT offers 43 majors leading to the AAS, BFA, BS, MA, and MPS degrees. Visit www.fitnyc.edu.
