The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) Summer Cocktail Party

On June 23, 2009, The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) made a small dent in the fight against global poverty through the IIRR Summer Cocktail fundraiser and outreach event hosted at Maru Lounge in New York City.

IIRR is a small international development, research and training organization with over 80 years of grassroots experience working in Africa and Asia. IIRR is one of the few international development organizations with its headquarters in the Global South, strategically located to facilitate south-south learning and exchange.

Since the 1920s, IIRR has been building the capacity of the poor and their organizations to help them address the root causes of poverty and to help them develop and deliver sustainable solutions. Together with our local partners, we work to release the social, economic, intellectual and physical potential of the communities we work with. IIRR's efforts enable people to stabilize their income, obtain quality education, attain gender equality, mitigate disaster, manage conflict, protect and preserve the environment, cultivate their own food and access health services.

The event drew many guests from around the world, including Uganda, Ethiopia, the Philippines, and Kenya. Special guest Doua Moua (Gran Torino, 2008) emceed the evening while music was provided by DJ GetLive (http://www.djgetlive.com). Most importantly, IIRR’s President, Isaac Bekalo, inspired guests with stories about our work in rural Africa and Asia, from the arid plains of Ethiopia to the coastal areas of the Philippines.
