National Committee on American Foreign Policy Hosts the 2012 Gala Awards Dinner

On Thursday, March 8th, the National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP) hosted its annual Gala Awards Dinner.

Held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, more than 275 of the country’s foremost scholars, prominent government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and philanthropists gathered in support of the NCAFP’s initiatives and to honor Former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, The Honorable Karl W. Eikenberry, Chairman of the Board and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, Muhtar Kent and the recipients of the 21st Century Leader Award. Proceeds from the evening benefitted the National Committee’s educational programs that address security challenges facing the Unites States.

Scott Pelley, managing editor for the CBS Evening News and correspondent for 60 Minutes led the evening as Master of Ceremonies. The George F. Kennan Award for Distinguished Public Service was awarded to The Hon. Karl W. Eikenberry for his service as U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan from May 2009 until July 2011, where he led the civilian surge by President Obama to reverse insurgent momentum and set the transition to full Afghan sovereignty. Prior to becoming Chief of Mission in Kabul, Ambassador Eikenberry had a 35-year career in the U.S. Army. Last year’s recipient, New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, presented the award to Eikenberry.

Following Eikenberry’s award, Muhtar Kent was honored with the Global Business Leadership Award, presented by last year’s honoree Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, Chairman and CEO of Qualcomm. Kent received this award for his exemplary involvement, commitment and leadership in promoting U.S. national interests around the globe, not only as CEO of The Coca-Cola Company where he presides over one of the world’s most recognizable brands, but also as the chief architect of the company’s 20/20 Vision Roadmap.

The evening also honored two professionals with the 21st Century Leader Award, which the NCAFP created to recognize the achievements of individuals under the age of 40. Brendan McGuire, Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York has been the lead prosecutor for some of the most significant terrorism prosecutions within the Department of Justice. Farhana Qazi is the first American Muslim woman to serve in the Counter-Terrorism Center for the U.S. Government, and has received several meritorious awards for her service to U.S. national security.
