DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS Kicked Off The 2009 DINING BY DESIGN National Tour In NYC.

The multi-city tour launched in New York City on Thursday, March 26th raising approximately $750,000.

DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS launched the 2009 DINING BY DESIGN tour with 5-days of events that ran concurrently with the Architectural Digest Home Design Show at Pier 94, 12th Ave. at 55th Street in New York City on Thursday, March 26th through Monday, March 30th. DIFFA’s DINING BY DESIGN brings together some of the most talented and celebrated individuals in the worlds of fashion, interior design, art, and architecture to create spectacular, over-the-top dining environments.
Notable guests included Whoopi Goldberg, David Rockwell, Robert Verdi, Olivia Palermo, Tracy Reese, Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza, David Stark, Evette Rios and Marc Blackwell.

The multi-city tour, which in past years has raised more than $13 million for DIFFA, features awe-inspiring dining installations by design luminaries such as David Rockwell for Rockwell Group, Marc Blackwell for Castello di Gabbiano, Jason Wu for Stolichnaya elit, Campion Platt for Architectural Digest, David Stark for Benjamin Moore, David Beahm for Continental Airlines, Alfredo Paredes for Ralph Lauren Home, HP, Christopher Coleman & Angel Sanchez for Profiles, Tracy Reese, Brad Ford I.D., Tracy Stern for SalonTea, Susan Lawton for Center44, Poggenpohl with Vasi Ypsilantis and Margreet Cevasco for Architects & Designers Building, Supima & sHoP for The New York Times, ddc, Jens Ahlemeyer and New Day Woodwork for The New York Times, Michael Tavano for the New York Design Center, Kravet Inc., Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc. as well as Jerry Sibal for Design Fusion, Jorge Cazzorla for Celebrate Flowers, jesGORDON/properFUN, Eric Warner, Faune Yerby, Shelly Sabel, -ful Studio, The Alpha Workshops, and Razortoothdesign.

In support of DIFFA, Michael C. Fina proudly outfitted five tables for DINING BY DESIGN with exclusive merchandise from their 5th Avenue store and also held an event entitled “After Hours: A DINING BY DESIGN After Party” at their store on April 1st which featured smaller-scale versions of the tables and installations showcased at DINING BY DESIGN. Michael C. Fina donated 20% of all purchases to benefit DIFFA’s future programming and outreach efforts.

The 2008 introduction of a Student Design Initiative, presented by Benjamin Moore, returned again this year. Participating design schools included: FIT with mentor David Beahm, the New York School of Interior Design with mentors Rick Shaver and Lee Melahn of Shaver/Melahn, NYU with mentor Miles Redd, Parsons with mentor Vicente Wolfe and SVA with mentor Robert Verdi. Each design mentor guided their student team through the creative process from conception to execution, working within a strict budget. The goal of the Student Design Initiative is to give the next generation of great designers the rare opportunity to work with some of the best design veterans in the business and participate in one of the industry’s keynote events.
DINING BY DESIGN once again featured TABLE HOP & TASTE. Open to the public on Sunday afternoon, ticket buyers were able to view the amazing design installations and savor culinary treats from New York’s top restaurants and gourmet food purveyors paired with Castello di Gabbiano wines. Participants include: Bella Cucina Artful Food, Dandoy Biscuits, Estiatorio Milos, French Culinary Institute, ICON, Ilili, Kittichai, LA Burdick Chocolate, Murray’s Cheese, North Square, Paris Commune and Tribeca Grill.
Guests at the gala dinner on Monday, March 30th dined within the design installations, making the event a truly unique experience for all who attended. Following DINING BY DESIGN New York, the installations will travel across the country to various cities including Kansas City, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, San Francisco, Chicago and Columbus.
