Children at Heart

This year’s Children at Heart Gala Dinner and Celebrity Fantasy Auction took place on Monday, November 22, 2010 at Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers, Pier Sixty. The event was a tremendous success and raised nearly 2 million dollars.

A star-studded list of guests were present including Whoopi Goldberg (recipient of the “Children at Heart Award”), Jesse Eisenberg—star of the Golden Globe winning film The Social Network, and Joshua Sussman of Fox’s hit television show, Glee. Also in attendance were WNBC-TV’s Bruce Beck (who served as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies and Guest Auctioneer), world-renowned artist David Kracov, Scarface’s Steven Bauer, Olympic gold medalist and world figure skating champion Oksana Baiul, Bret Lockett of the New England Patriots, Mrs. Frank Perdue, and many more notable figures.

CCOC’s International Director Yossi Swerdlov along with Executive Director Esti Herman kicked off the evening. Simon Swerdlow who was rescued on CCOC’s very first rescue mission presented the first award to Harris Toibb, Event Chair and Underwriter. Joycelyn Engle, Vice-President of Supernova Media Inc., received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” for her many accomplishments, significant achievements in the entertainment industry, and involvement with CCOC for over 16 years. As a strong supporter of numerous charitable works, current Vice Chairman of Barclays Capital Harvey Krueger received the “Humanitarian Award”. Senior Vice President for Government Affairs and
Associate General Counsel, Robert Land, accepted the “Dreams Take Flight Award” on behalf of JetBlue Airways. Straight off of their tour with America’s Got Talent, the blacklight performance group, Fighting, Gravity demonstrated how “Dreams Take Flight” with an incredible show of gravity defying illusions.

As a result of this year’s benefit gala, the 92nd rescue mission took place on December 10th saving another 20 children and bringing the total number of children saved to 2,730 since the project’s inception. Today, almost twenty-five years after the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded, children continue to suffer from cancer, heart maladies, and birth defects as a result of their exposure to the toxic levels of radiation.
