Champions for Children Gala

Champions for Children Gala

On Wednesday, November 17, 2010 the Randall’s Island Sports Foundation (RISF) hosted the Champions for Children Gala celebrating the expanded and restored athletic fields on Randall’s Island.

The evening, co-chaired by Benefit Chair Richard Mack and Benefit Vice Chair Michael Boxer, honored community leaders, who were selected for their influential work in improving the overall health of children through nutrition education, and sports.

The evening included cocktails, dinner, and a silent auction of exciting sports memorabilia and exclusive experiences. Nearly 500 guests were welcomed to espace by Master of Ceremonies, radio and TV sports talk-show host Ann Liguori. Large-scale aerial photography of the island’s radical transformation, by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, Vincent Laforet, were projected onto the walls of the ballroom; and vibrant photographs of children playing sports at Randall’s Island, created by Visual Anthropologist, Doug Menuez, were displayed in the cocktail area.

Andrew Tisch, Founding Trustee of RISF and Chairman of Lowes Corporation, was presented with the Philanthropic Leadership Award by the Commissioner of NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, Adrian Benepe. Dan Barber, Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Blue Hill Restaurant, NYC and Blue Hill at Stone Barns, was presented with the Leadership in Culinary Art Award by his mentor and old friend Tim Zagat of Zagat Survey. Richard Davis, Chairman of RISF and Partner, Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP was presented with an award for Transforming New York City’s Future by John Zuccotti, US Chairman of Brookfield Properties and senior counsel to Weil, Gotshal & Manges' Real Estate department. Yankees star players and long time supporters of RISF, Robinson Cano and Mariano Rivera accepted the Sportsmanship Awards via video, which were presented by student and athlete from the Public Schools Athletic League, Michael Fermin.

The evening raised over $860,000 to further the vital work of RISF. Founded in 1992, RISF works to realize the island’s unique potential by developing sports and recreational facilities, restoring its vast natural environment, reclaiming and maintaining parkland, and sponsoring programs for the children of New York City. RISF programs are offered free of charge to thousands of children annually, and are run in close partnership with over 120 local public schools and community-based organizations in Harlem and the South Bronx.
